Middle Ages Entertainment
There were all types of people during the middle ages who liked to entertain themselves by many means. People of all statures tried to enjoy the festivities and banquets at their utmost. Entertainment types varied according to the status of the locals. Fees, banquets, jousts, tournaments, sports events fairs, animal entertainment etc. The prime source of entertainment in the Middle ages was festivals and banquets. People used to enjoy a lot of holidays apart from Sundays only. There used to be eight free weeks apart from Sundays in the entire year. Festivities like Christmas, Easter, May day, the ploughing day, Harvest day, first rain of the season, used to be celebrated like anything else throughout the year.
The entertainers who were the key people in the field of entertainment were Jesters ( fool at medieval courts), Mummers (masked or costumed dancers and actors), minstrels, acrobats, jugglers and conjurers. They used to provide the entertainment in the Middle ages to all types of people ranging from the royal kings to the poor farmers. If we compare the entertainment in 1960s with the entertainment in Middle ages, you will see a lot of difference between the cost that people used to pay to get entertainment. It used to be honest, plain and simple back then. Nowadays the entertainment is more focused on glamour and media.
Games were also quite popular sources of entertainment in Middle ages. Games were played by the upper and middle class society people. Adults and children both used to play games that involved some logical techniques or some physical efforts. Some of those games are still played today like card games, board games, dice games, sporting games and children games. For children, there used to be fairs where they could ride on different mechanical and innovative rides. Kids really used to enjoy their spare time by coming to such festivities and eating yummy food and ice cream. Some of the famous games of Middle ages are: Chess, Backgammon, Nine Men’s Morris, Hazard, Fox and Geese etc.
Entertainment for rich people used to be very authentic and worth remembering. There used to be banquets and festivals where only rich people could go as the services provided in such festivals could only be afforded by them. Tournaments of horse races and jousts were the primary choices of rich people. Musicians used to be hired by the rich people to play music in the festivals that used to change the environment of the entire place to a great extent. There were acrobats, fire-eaters and conjurers who used to entertain the rich ones. Knights used to present the fighting tournaments along with a bit of dance. The period of Middle Ages was very elegant and it gave rise to many festivals and modes of entertainment that are still popular.
